Reviews & Scores
While 2005 marks the vintage when premature oxidation began to make extensive depredations in the Leflaive cellars, this bottle of the 2005 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles was actually quite reductive on opening, unfurling in the glass with notes of mandarin oil, wheat toast, pear and pastry cream as its gentle leesiness dissipated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and quite textural, with chewy, almost phenolic extract and good length, nicely balanced in this sometimes-blowsy vintage. My only criticism would be that in personality this bottle seemed to nod more to Meursault than Puligny. (WK) - WA

The 2005 Pucelles, for whatever reason, is a bigger step up in quality from the Combettes than is normally the case, as this wine is brilliant in 2005. The bouquet is a deep and harmonious blend of apple, white peach, lemon, spring flowers, chalky soil tones and vanilla. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and silky on the attack, with a fine core of fruit, bright, zesty acidity, and a great backend of minerals and snappy acids. A very, very fine premier cru in this vintage. - JG

A very discreet touch of brioche highlights the much more reserved honeysuckle, anise, honeysuckle and apricot aromas that are elegant, pure and wonderfully refined and dissolve into sweet, intense and unusually precise flavors that also reflect more minerality than I typically find in this wine as well, culminating in superb punch and energy. A terrific vintage for Pucelles and one to consider closely. *Outstanding* - BH

Firm and linear, exhibiting lime, stone, hazelnut and herb aromas and flavors. This is cool in character, with precision balance and a long aftertaste of mineral and toast. Still young, with fine potential. Needs more time to show all its facets. (BS) - WS

Very broad and engaging on the nose with its slightly toasty topnote. Round and glorious with a thoroughly satisfying texture – quite a mouthful. So clean yet rich! This has real depth and savour. At the end of the palate it shut down a little but all in all this was a very good showing indeed. This would be dangerously easy to enjoy young. Great richness but great balance – no shortage of acidity. 18.5/20 points - JR
