Reviews & Scores
The color is just beginning to lighten at the rim. There is ample secondary influence to the spicy dried red berry scents that reflect additional notes of soft earth and a whiff of the sauvage. There is both excellent intensity and minerality to the beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that culminate in a linear, focused and sneaky long finish that is dusty and still a bit austere. This is unlikely to ever be a seductive wine as it's shaped and defined by its acidity but I very much like the depth on offer. For my taste, this has just now arrived at the front end of its prime drinking window though I underscore that it should hold here for at least another decade. Lovely. - BH

The ’08 Clos St. Jacques was much more closed down and reserved than the Clos des Ruchottes in November, but its quality is also outstanding. The bouquet is deep and very classy, as it offers up scents of red and black cherries, chocolate, a touch of meatiness, fresh herbs, complex soil and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, fairly closed down and extremely elegant, with a rock solid core of fruit, fine-grained tannins, lovely acidity and very fine length and grip on the complex and classic finish. A superb bottle in the making. - JG

Bright yet palish colour, as expected. There is a lovely explosion of fruit at the front of the palate, a little less behind with a mix of light tannin and acidity at the back. The fruit weight is more on the front foot but the elegance of the wine at the back is striking. - JM

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru is an absolute joy to behold and in terms of drinking now a sheer pleasure, surpasses both the 1996 and 2005 tasted the previous day. It bursts with pixelated red cherry and strawberry fruit on the nose, laced with minerals and light citrus scents. The palate is powerful and certainly not dense. Yet it possesses disarming transparency and fabulous precision, weightless yet paradoxically intense with a long tail on the finish. It is more a Clos Saint-Jacques of texture and feeling than obvious fruit descriptors. Wonderful. Tasted at Fook Lam Moon in Hong Kong. - VM
